Utterly is a private, on-device AI transcription app built for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Unlike cloud-based services such as Otter or Rev, Utterly performs all speech-to-text processing locally using Apple silicon — meaning recordings never leave the device, no account is required, and the app works fully offline. It supports 25 European languages, live transcription, audio file transcription, dictation mode, and system audio captioning. Free to download with unlimited live transcription, with Pro features available via subscription or a $59.99 one-time lifetime purchase. Utterly is built by Semantic Bridge, an independent studio focused on privacy-respecting AI tools.
What makes Utterly different
100% on-device
Audio never leaves the device. No servers, no API keys, no cloud account. Works on a plane, in a tunnel, in a hospital, or in a sensitive interview.
25 European languages, day one
Most on-device transcription apps support 3–5 languages. Utterly ships all 25 European languages — full accuracy, auto-detected on the fly, no extra downloads, fully offline.
Accessibility-first
Live captions for system audio support Deaf and hard-of-hearing users. No cloud delay, full punctuation, works inside any app — Zoom, Teams, FaceTime, podcasts.
No subscription required
Unlimited live transcription on the free tier. A $59.99 one-time lifetime purchase unlocks Pro forever — no recurring fees, no per-minute pricing, no per-seat lock-in.
One plan, every device
Universal app for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Every paid plan — Weekly, Monthly, and Lifetime — covers all devices on the same Apple ID plus up to 5 Family Sharing members. One purchase, every screen.
Beyond transcription
Companion web tools at utterlyapp.com: a free browser-based translator (47 language pairs, on-device WASM) and an audio/video file converter (ffmpeg.wasm, no uploads).

Founder · available for interviews
Sergey Khalil is the founder of Utterly, an on-device transcription app he built after a hard-of-hearing student in his online language school asked for private, accurate live captions during lessons.
Sergey Khalil is the founder of Utterly, a private on-device AI transcription app for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. He built the first version after a hard-of-hearing student in the online language school he runs with his wife Jordan asked for live captions during lessons — and found nothing on the market that was simultaneously private, fast, and accurate.
Sergey trained as a software engineer at Codam Amsterdam, holds an MSc from the University of Amsterdam with research published in Elsevier on neural networks for time-series forecasting, and now builds Utterly full-time as part of Semantic Bridge — the indie studio he co-founded with Jordan in the Netherlands.
Sergey Khalil is the founder of Utterly, a private on-device AI transcription app for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. He built the first prototype after a hard-of-hearing student in the online language school he runs with his wife Jordan asked for accurate live captions during lessons — and found that no existing tool was simultaneously private, fast, and accurate enough to help her follow conversations. That student now says the captions changed her life; she also uses them at her remote job.
Sergey trained as a software engineer at Codam Amsterdam (part of École 42) while completing an MSc at the University of Amsterdam, with a thesis internship at CWI — the Dutch national research institute for mathematics and computer science — that resulted in a peer-reviewed Elsevier publication on custom CNN-LSTM neural networks for time-series forecasting. He later co-taught Python introduction seminars at MIT with his thesis supervisor, before shipping multiple SaaS products as co-founder of an accounting-software startup and working as a DevOps consultant for KPN and TenneT, two of the Netherlands' largest infrastructure operators.
Utterly is now his full-time focus at Semantic Bridge, the indie studio he co-founded with Jordan — who is also his collaborator on the language school that prompted the project. His expertise covers on-device ML optimisation, applied AI, and computational linguistics; he speaks three languages personally, Jordan speaks six.
Quick answers for reviewers
How is "on-device" actually verified?
The app declares no network entitlements for transcription. You can verify by running Utterly with the device in airplane mode — transcription works at full speed. The Pro upgrade purchase obviously requires App Store connectivity, but the transcription model itself never makes a network call.
What model powers transcription?
Utterly uses a state-of-the-art on-device speech recognition model running on Apple's Neural Engine and GPU. The specific model and its attribution are disclosed in our privacy policy as required by the model's open-source license. We're happy to share architectural details under embargo for technical reviews — email press@utterlyapp.com.
Which languages are supported?
25 European languages: Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Maltese, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Ukrainian. The app auto-detects and switches between them on the fly during transcription.
What's the difference between free and Pro?
Free: unlimited live transcription, 3 file transcriptions, all 25 languages, 25 dictations per week. Pro: unlimited file transcription, system audio capture (transcribe any meeting/podcast/video routed through the speakers), unlimited dictation. Pro is $5.99/week, $14.99/month, or $59.99 one-time lifetime. Every plan covers all devices on the same Apple ID (iPhone, iPad, and Mac) plus up to 5 Family Sharing members.
What accuracy can reviewers expect?
Independent WER benchmarks on standard English test sets: 1.93% on LibriSpeech test-clean, 3.59% on test-other, 2.75% on TEDLIUM-v3. Average across the Hugging Face Open ASR Leaderboard (8 English test sets including noisy real-world data like AMI meetings and Earnings-22 calls): 6.34%. Multilingual Fleurs benchmarks include Italian 3.0%, Russian 5.5%, Spanish 3.5%, French 5.2%, German 5.0%. Long-form audio: up to ~3 hours per file; the app chunks longer files transparently.
Can I redistribute screenshots and logos?
Yes, freely, for editorial coverage of Utterly. The press kit ZIP includes screenshots in PNG and WebP for iPhone, iPad, and Mac, plus logo files in multiple sizes. No prior approval needed.
Can I get a free copy of Utterly Pro to review?
Yes — we offer free App Store promo codes that unlock Utterly Pro Lifetime ($59.99 value) at no cost to any publication or independent reviewer covering the app. Email press@utterlyapp.com with: (1) the publication or outlet name, (2) the article, comparison, or software listing you're planning to include Utterly in (link to the existing page or draft, or a 1-2 sentence outline if it's not written yet), and (3) the App Store region you need the code for. We'll send the redemption code within one business day.
